Overview
Brokers and advisors often want to compare how a client’s or prospect’s current portfolio is performing against a model portfolio, or test how a group of schemes would perform before recommending them to a client.
The Model Portfolio feature allows you to simulate such an “ideal portfolio” by selecting schemes, assigning investment amounts, and comparing the result against a benchmark and a client’s actual portfolio. It helps answer questions like:
How would this scheme combination have performed?
Is this allocation better than what the client currently holds?
Does the model align with the strategy tailored for the client?
This article walks you through creating a model portfolio, analyzing its performance, and using it for comparison with your client portfolios.

Creating a Model Portfolio
Start by searching for any existing model portfolios using the search bar.
If you want to create a new one, click on "New Model Portfolio" at the top right.
Then follow these steps:
Enter a name and a brief description for the model.
Select a benchmark (optional) from the dropdown.
Add the schemes of your choice and specify the investment amounts for each.
You can also check the "Include Factsheet" option to attach factsheets of the selected schemes.
Once everything is in place, click "Save" to generate the model.
This creates a model portfolio ready for deeper analysis and comparison.
Model Portfolio Analysis
Once the model portfolio is saved, the next step is to analyse it. Click on the ‘Portfolio Analysis’ button next to the ‘Create Model Portfolio’ button. It will open a PDF containing detailed insights:
Asset Allocation: Category-wise, sub-category-wise, fund-wise, and scheme-wise breakdowns.
Holding Analysis: Sector-wise, scrip-wise, debt allocation by rating, and debt allocation by paper.
Growth Chart: A visual comparison between the model and the benchmark over time.
This section helps you validate the diversification, risk exposure, and performance potential of your model.
Using the Model Portfolio
As we realised in the previous section, clicking the Portfolio Analysis button will generate a PDF containing its complete analysis. This serves as your benchmark comparison. Now, let’s move on to how you can compare the model portfolio with actual client and prospect portfolios.
Comparing with Client or Family Head Portfolios
In the comparison section, you’ll find the option to choose between Client, Family Head, or Prospect. The Family Head selection is useful when you want to compare the consolidated holdings of a client’s family against the model portfolio.
Here’s how to compare with a client’s portfolio:
Note: Firstly, make sure you have selected the desired Model Portfolio from the upper section.
Ensure the Client option is selected among the three options.
Search for the client using their name or PAN.
Select the comparison period from the options: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years.
You can click Portfolio Analysis and also view the standalone analysis of the prospect’s holdings.
For a quick visual comparison, click Compare with Model to view an AUM trend line graph.
For a detailed analysis, click Download Portfolio Comparison to open a PDF comparison report.
If prompted for a password, enter the client's PAN in capital letters.
You can follow the same process for Family Head, where all family portfolios are consolidated and compared against the model.
Comparing with Prospect Portfolios
To compare a model portfolio with a prospect:
Note: Firstly, make sure you have selected the desired Model Portfolio from the upper section.
Now, select the Prospect option.
From the list of prospects, search and select a name.
You can click Portfolio Analysis and also view the standalone analysis of the prospect’s holdings.
To create a new prospect portfolio:
Click New Client Portfolio.
Enter Portfolio Name, Description, Benchmark (optional), and upload a CAS file with its password.
Alternatively, add schemes manually.
Click Save.
Once saved, select the prospect and choose between ‘Compare with Model’ & ‘Download Portfolio Comparison’ to generate the graph & comparison report respectively.
Conclusion
The Model Portfolio tool helps you simulate, validate, and compare investment ideas with precision. Whether you're constructing a proposal from scratch or improving a client’s current strategy, this feature lets you back your recommendations with data and visual insights.
